WORKS by a talented photographer from York will be showcased in a national exhibition in London.

Images by David Kenward will be displayed in The Reveal exhibition at The Menier Gallery next month.

It is the first major visual arts exhibition in Britain to solely promote the work of artists with Down Syndrome, and is timed to open at the beginning of Down Syndrome Awareness Week.

David was the first person in York with Down Syndrome to remain in mainstream school throughout his education.

The 23-year-old attended Fulford School and subsequently won commendations for his work in the National Down’s Association’s My Perspective competition. His phoography has been displayed and sold in the Mermaid and Miller shop in Swinegate.

Other artists include surreal line drawer Lester Magoogan, who has exhibited at Tate Modern, The Oxo Gallery and The Lowry in Salford.

The exhibition is being organised by Heart & Sold, a not-for-profit organisation established to help celebrate, support and promote artists with Down Syndrome. Director Suzie Moffat began promoting art by people with Down Syndrome after her son was born with the condition in 2007.

She said: “The more I looked into it, the more I discovered a host of talented artists in Britain and abroad who just happened to have Down Syndrome. I was determined to give them a platform to celebrate their creativity and talent, which stands alone and apart from their condition.”

The exhibition is in The Menier Gallery in Southwark Street, London, from March 17 to 22.
