RESIDENTS could benefit from the creation of a new wind turbine near York, a local group have claimed.
At a number of sites around the UK, local communities have gathered to build a wind turbine and benefit from the sale of renewable energy. Local organisation York Community Energy wants to hear from interested members of the public.
As reported in The Press last week, the group has already spoken to City of York Council’s planning department, and confirmed a wind turbine on Murton Moor would not require a full Environmental Impact Assessment, although detailed technical reports would still be required if a planning application were submitted.
Group member Richard Lane, said: “This is about community democracy as much as it is about clean energy. This plan cannot work unless there is community support.
“The response we’ve had has been mixed but generally positive – broadly in line with national polls which consistently show around 60 to 70 per cent support for onshore wind turbines. We’re keen to hear from anyone interested, whether they have concerns or want to get involved.”
The Murton Moor site already identified by the group could see a turbine 61.5m high with 38m blades – taller than York Minster.
It could create enough energy to power 1,200 homes and bring £130,000 a year to the local community.
