PROTESTERS have appealed to the Government to scrap work capability assessments being carried out by a private firm.

As part of a coordinated national demonstration, protesters gathered outside the the St Deny Road office, where assessments to judge whether someone can work are carried out by staff of the private firm Atos.

The business has increasingly come under fire for its dealings with disabled people attending work capability assessments, with Government figures showing 10,600 people died within six weeks of being declared for for work, the trade union Unite said.

More than 40 per cent of cases in which people have been deemed fit to work, and had their benefits cut have then had their appeals upheld.

Graham Martin, of York People’s Assembly, said: “Many vulnerable people have been affected by a very unclear testing process which is very stressful and often has a negative effect on their wellbeing.”

The nationwide protest called for assessments to consult GPs and also objected to the the privatisation of the assessment system.

A spokesman for Atos said: "Atos Healthcare has no control over welfare policy, the design of the Work Capability Assessment (WCA), or the specific eligibility criteria for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). These are set by government.

"Our healthcare professionals use their clinical judgement in order to apply the government-designed criteria and they do not have the scope to make any assessment outside of these guidelines.”

Why are the commentors above assuming that those protesting are unemployed? Not everyone works Monday to Friday.

What is wrong with you people? Why assume that because those protesting are unemployed? Who are you people?

I have several jobs, that's me on the end. I was there protesting for those who couldn't because they are too ill. I'm there protesting in memory of the 10,600 people who DIED after their money was stopped, you heartless bunch. People who have weeks left to live and yet are deemed fit to work, people who have then spent their last days on this earth without any money, food or heat. Or the man who was told he was fit to work by ATOS even though he had a severe heart condition and who DIED during further assessment. He still got letters saying he hadn't reported to his meetings with them weeks after he died.

So I say to you haters - you lack any human decency. Pray it's never you that is involved in a horrible accident and left in a wheelchair unable to work or you get struck down with cancer or illness because you'll be thankful of the day that people like me, stood up and protested. Give your heads a shake, you disgust me!

What a shame our society can still produce people as ignorant and uninformed as mr marcus and oi oi savaloy. Just shows that our school system seems to be failing so badly in the area of maths. They cant even understand basic statistics. I could be wrong maybe they just don't understand that they could so easily find themselves in the same position as those people who are forced into stressful and harowing tests and interviews to try to prove what a medical professional has already advised.

I have chronic arthritis in my knees and I'm having an operation on both of them in 2 weeks. I have a number of illnesses that are unpleasant but I DO NOT CLAIM DISABILITY BENEFITS. I do work and like I said, I have several jobs that exceed your 37 hours.

What part of what I wrote do you not understand? We were there for those who couldn't be. Or are you like ATOS and expect the dead to still turn up for their work placement interviews? Moron.
