A NEW parking scheme could be introduced in two York streets, six years after residents said they did not want it.

A 2008 consultation in Malton Avenue and Irwin Avenue in Heworth saw 72 per cent of respondants oppose the residents’ parking scheme, mainly because of the signs and road markings that would be needed.

However, a new petition was organised by Heworth councillor Ruth Potter after commuters and people in flats off Heworth Green began parking in the streets.

In a report, City of York Council transport officials said non-resident parking on the two streets is believed to have risen since 2008.

There are 32 named households on the petition, less than half of the total in Malton Avenue and Irwin Avenue.

The officials said this level of support was not enough for residents’ parking to be introduced and a second consultation will now be held.
