Cocktail bar to pop-up at secret location in York

York Press: Ross Woodford with one of his cocktails Ross Woodford with one of his cocktails

A SECRET location in York is to host a hidden bar for cocktail fans.

Barman Ross Woodford is setting up a pop-up cocktail bar for three nights only from Friday, February 28, in an atmospheric setting in the city centre.

Ross, 25, is a barman in Lucia’s wine bar, but wants to start something of his own in York’s bar scene.

Ross, who was born and brought up in York and attended Canon Lee School, said: “At the moment, there aren’t many places for good cocktails in York, and I used to work in bars in Sydney, Australia, where little pop-up nights like this are very popular.”

He will run the bar himself, with help from friends who also work in bars across the city.

The venue will welcome 20 to 40 people each night, but Ross is keeping the venue secret until the last minute when he will send out invitations through the event’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/speakeasylibations.

Will be interesting to see how successful it is, given the number of times James Wreglesworth has tried and sadly failed to sustain a successful cocktail bar in York.

Maybe short stints are the answer...

Love the ethos behind this, but let's not forget that we do already have an amazing cocktail bar which uses premium, fresh ingredients - 'Sotano'. The only place that comes close to that is 'The Cedar Court Grand.'

Well, if he pays his taxes like most people, then yes.

And it's 'centre'. This is York, not New York. :-) #GrammarPolice

It can't be totally secret can it? Surely he's had to apply for a licence to sell alcohol hasn't he?......in fact if you look at the temporary event register on the council website you can find the location in about 10 seconds!

Banyan York, Lucias, The Slug And Lettuce, Pitcher & Piano, Thomas's Bar York, 1331 Restaurant, Bora Bora, Vudu Lounge, Oscars York, The Biltmore Bar and Grill , Evil Eye Lounge to name just 11 places in a small area to drink cocktails in York.

All are reasonable but the word "good" depends on your opinion of it. I'm all for his idea and hope it's a success but there are certainly not a lack of places in York to drink decent cocktails.

I like bars that sell cocktails, I like people who drink cocktails, they tend to make places a little more swish. But I do not drink cocktails and I hate getting to a bar to order a couple of pints, when the lady in front orders 6 different cocktails....please please please if you are going to serve drinks that take an age to prepare open a cocktail counter.
