COMMUNITY groups across North Yorkshire are being invited to think small when it comes to gardening – so they can showcase their work at a celebration of flowers.

Harrogate Spring Flower Show, which runs from April 24 to 27, is launching a competition for Pocket Gardens, which will be displayed to 60,000 visitors and exhibitors.

The one-metre by one-metre plots can have any theme and style, and first prize is £150.

Flower shows director Nick Smith said: “Gardens have always been a great way to tell a story and we hope our pocket gardens will give a wide range of community groups a new opportunity to reach thousands of people.”

“The competition could also lead to bigger things for some groups, who might like to build full-sized gardens in the future.”

Schools, gardening groups, societies and charities are all being invited to take part, with each team being provided with a wooden frame and compost. To enter, email Ben Wray at info@flowershow.org.uk or visit flowershow.org.uk. Entries close on February 28.

The show will be held at the Great Yorkshire Showground and feature more large-scale gardens than ever, displays from more than 100 plant nurseries and the UK’s biggest exhibition of flower arranging and floristry.

There will also be expert talks and demonstrations, and local food.
