A REMARKABLE schoolboy who communicates using his eyes has written songs, stories and poetry by blinking.

Adam Bojelian, 14, of Bilbrough, near York, has very severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy as well as other medical problems which mean his only movement comes from his eyes and head.

The Tadcaster Grammar School pupil composes his work with the support of mum Zoe and teaching or nursing staff, through a painstaking process of looking at letters and lists and blinking.

Having won a string of awards already for his work – including a Brit Writers Award – and writing a song which peaked at number two in the iTunes children’s music chart, Adam has now been nominated for a Young Epilepsy Champion Award.

Zoe said: “It’s amazing he can do this. He is very determined. A psychologist said when he was as young as two, that because of the things he couldn’t do, he would really focus on the things he could. He has spent so much time in hospital intently listening to words. He has just always loved books.”

More recently, Adam has been asked to compose a song for Leeds Rhinos.

Eduzine magazine – in which Adam edits his own poetry page – has also asked him to write a poem for Prince George, which is due to be set to music.

Adam, who has daily seizures and has spent half of his life in hospital, recently moved with parents Zoe and Paul to Bilbrough.

Although he has been in hospital in Leeds for a number of months due to ill-health, Adam usually attends Tadcaster Grammar where he can complete work by blinking.

In 2012, he wrote a Christmas song which attracted backing from Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor. His ditty, called the Christmas Gibbons, tells the story of how Santa only manages to deliver his presents in one night because he has an army of monkeys to help him out.

The song came about as Adam was given the chance to have a wish granted and, while most children ask for a trip to Disneyland, he asked to have a poem made into a song.

He worked with a Hollywood music composer, Tom Harrison, to compose the song for charity.

Adam has written about what makes good hospital care in his blog, Blink of an Eye, which has been read at several NHS conferences and picked up by NHS England.

National charity, Young Epilepsy will hold its Young Epilepsy Champion Awards 2014 this coming March.

• Adam has invited children to send their poetry to him with a view to possibly including them on his magazine page.
