AN MP has praised a model York housing development as “just what York needs and a real boost to the area”.

York Central MP Hugh Bayley yesterday visited Derwenthorpe, the 540-home settlement being built on York’s eastern outskirts by David Wilson Homes in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT).

He said that having visited 18 months ago, it was great to see the transformation which has taken place.

He said: “Empty buildings are now occupied by families and the community is springing to life.

“There is a real need for more affordable housing in York and this development shows what can be achieved if designers and builders work together with the council and housing associations to provide high-quality, environmentally friendly homes.

“Derwenthorpe has a mix of homes for rent, part-ownership and for sale at varying prices, it also has homes which have been built for people with disabilities.

“It is a real community now and the Residents Association reflects this. High-quality housing like this is just what York needs and it is a real boost to the area. I congratulate everyone who has turned this dream into a reality.”
