Hugh Bayley tries his hand at bingo calling to highlight tax campaign

York Press: York Central MP Hugh Bayley tries his hand at bingo calling at Clifton Bingo in York York Central MP Hugh Bayley tries his hand at bingo calling at Clifton Bingo in York

FROM the House of Commons to a full house – a York MP has given his backing to bingo by trying his hand as a caller.

Hugh Bayley, who represents York Central, helped to launch a new free national game called Boost Bingo, promoting a campaign to bring tax on the game in line with other gambling activities.

Most pursuits involving betting are taxed at 15 per cent, but bingo duty stands at 20 per cent. The Bingo Association has said lowering this duty would allow more investment in the game and create more jobs.

A recent survey of more than 2,000 people found 61 per cent believed bingo clubs were an important local service and bring communities together.

Mr Bayley gave his support by taking the mic at Clifton Bingo Club in York, as it was launched simultaneously at about 400 bingo halls around the UK.

It's always a good idea for an MP to have another skill to fall back on when a General Election beckons.
