TWO charities have thanked readers of The Press for their “overwhelmingly generous and supportive” response to our annual Toys & Tins Appeal.

Hundreds of toys, books, dolls, games and food items have poured in to the newspaper’s offices in Walmgate over the past fortnight.

The Salvation Army and Women’s Refuge both visited on Friday and left with vehicles packed to their roofs.

Major Andrew Dunkinson, of the Salvation Army, said the food would be put in hampers to be handed to needy individuals who had been referred to the organisation.

“This will make a phenomenal difference for those finding this year difficult,” he said. “We have seen an increase in referrals and an increase in financial need and hardship this year.

“These gifts will bring joy to a lot of adults and children. Once again, it’s great to see the community spirit alive and well in York.”

Children’s Support Worker Corrina Dobson, who collected toys and other gifts for the refuge with volunteer Sanny Price, said: “It’s an absolutely fantastic response. The people of York have really outdone themselves. This will make a massive difference to the children.

“The women and children come to us with nothing. Having these toys to give to the children takes the pressure off for Christmas.”

She said the refuge, run by Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), offers emergency accommodation and support to those who are escaping domestic abuse throughout North Yorkshire.

“We help those who are facing difficulty, both financially and emotionally. A lot won’t be able to spend time with their families this Christmas.

“The generosity of The Press readers is absolutely amazing. They have really exceeded themselves. It is much appreciated.”
