Blue Bell Pub, in Fossgate bans Christmas

York Press: Jim Hardie. of the Blue Bell Pub, in Fossgate,York, who has banned Christmas Jim Hardie. of the Blue Bell Pub, in Fossgate,York, who has banned Christmas

A YORK pub is certainly not decking its halls with boughs of holly as the landlord has declared it a “Christmas-free zone”.

There’s no tinsel, no tree, and no tunes about Santa and his sleigh at the Blue Bell in Fossgate.

Landlord Jim Hardie is more likely to be heard uttering “Bah Humbug” than “Merry Christmas” to his punters.

His stance came to light after The Press reported last week that customers had been turned away by doormen at Biltmore Bar and Grill for wearing Christmas jumpers.

After the story was published, several people claimed they had faced with a similar experience at the Blue Bell.

The Biltmore said its mishap was due to a misunderstanding between door staff and management, but the Blue Bell stood by its refusal to allow Christmas jumpers.

In fact Mr Hardie, who has run the 215-year-old pub for 12 years, said anyone wanting a celebratory drink and some festive fun would not feel welcome in the pub, Christmas jumper or not.

He said: “The Blue Bell doesn't do Christmas. We don't have decorations or anything. It gets too much everywhere. People get sick of getting Christmas rammed down their necks so we don’t have it here – that’s it.”

That's one pub I won't be visiting this Christmas time. By the way Jim. I also used to think it was cool to say that I don't like Christmas, when I was about twelve years old.

That said, each to their own eh?
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AT THE BLUE BELL!!!! Especially Jim.

I thought the policy in the Blue Bell was to only allow miserable regulars in and no one else who wants a drink all year round, not just Christmas.

Glad to hear it! People often forget that not everybody is big on Christian festivals. Having Christmas shoved down your throat every years is just as irritating as if Muslims tried to force Ramadan on you, or a legion of Roman soldiers tried to coerce you into Satrunalia.

There'd be uproar if any other religion than Christianity tried to do that in this country.

Bah, humbug!

He should just rename it the "Bar Humbug". It has been quirky over the years but, really, the Blue Bell is such a miserable place these days. The range of beers was regularly refreshed and showed imagination but now it's the staid same-old, same-old. It's like he can't be bothered any more. All those "private party" signs got it ruled out of the Good Beer guide so now all that's left is weak stunts like this to attract custom. And, when it doesn't arrive, expect to see Jim nervously tugging at a fag as he stands on the pavement covetously staring at punters enjoying themselves in The Hop, directly opposite. If trade at the Blue Bell is down, he's got no-one to blame but himself.

Nice to see you changed your hoody to have your picture taken for the press and your not wearing your usual scruffy hoody, some dress code you have, lead by example, at least my christmas jumper was tidy and not ill fitting

Not a regular of this pub by any means but do nip in often enough for a pint. At least I did. Stupid stunts like this will just make me go elsewhere.
I don't see how a bit of tinsel and a string of lights is hardly shoving Christmas down peoples' throats. I didn't think the Blue Bell did loud music and the pub couldn't fit a tree in anyway so I don't get what Mr Hardie is going on about.
Separately it's already been said, but I suppose all these people who hate Christmas so much will all be in work on Christmas day and Boxing day. I work in a job were I don't get a choice and in which annual leave is pretty much banned over Christmas. Me and my work colleagues working nights on Christmas Day and New Years Eve will happily take the time off and let all these anti-Christmas hypocrites take our place.

Xmas is once a year, its a time for people and families to get together, Its the one time in the year to all sit down and have a nice meal and a few drinks while watching classic xmas films. ONCE A YEAR!!!!!! How can people be soooooo grumpy at xmas? It begs to think how these people act for the rest of the year doesn't it. I have to admit though, xmas music played non stop for a month can be very irritating but apart from that, Whats this guys problem?

Won't be going into this pub any time soon, grumpy git

The Blue Bell must be really feeling the pinch from the welcoming and cheerful Hop over the road. Jim must be getting really desperate to court custom from the anti-Christmas brigade. We long-since abandoned the Blue Bell. It's strength was as a museum piece but it's weakness is a miserable, complacent landlord. It has become more like a private members' club in recent years but without the bonhomie and comfort!

Well Jim. Judging by the comments. Carry on with stunts like this and you'll be back emptying dustbins before you know it.
This has a similarity to the Gerald Ratner thing quite a few years ago, in a way. Jim is obviously clueless about good marketing of a business. He prefers to stand outside the Blue Bell with a fag in his gob, chatting to his cronies, who also could do with a personality transplant, flicking fag ash in his little bucket. Believe me, it's hard to build a good business up, but easy to see it fall on its arse.

Yep. Someone, (and I don't know how, maybe hacking or works for The Press or council) is also adding vast numbers of thumbs down and thumbs up to comments that they agree and disagree with! They are also pro, the Lendal bridge restrictions , anti-motorist and drink in the Blue Bell.

I put a comment on this thread earlier on in the day and almost immediately I had 50 dislikes. Sort it out Press, and prosecute!

Copy of email sent to press news desk re the messing about with voting stats, lets see if this get a thumbs down or better still a reply from the big Ed.

quote - As a regular commenter on news articles and letters, I can't help but notice as have many others, how the voting facility has been manipulated, it shows huge differentials i.e. +995 and -806 were two figures I noted, with all due respect these are indeed very highly suspect, please can you explain the reason?

It's nothing to do with people with no family at Christmas. It's about Jim grabbing attention for being a miserable git. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and be thankful for what you've got.

There'd be uproar if any other religion than Christianity tried to do that in this country.

Bah, humbug!
Do you honestly think that all the folk getting hammered are doing it for religious reasons?

I believe that you are full of sh1t. True or not, be grateful for what you have, and don't expect that everyone else should wallow in yours and Jim's misery. Embrace Christmas, you may find that little bit of happiness hiding deep within yourself, and it may grow.

Here's a tip. Watch one of the fantastic Charles Dickens interpretations of A Christmas Carol. You may learn something.
