Locomotives at National Railway Museum for Autumn Great Gathering
9:07am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in News
THE sister locomotives of Mallard will be in steam at the National Railway Museum (NRM) from this weekend.
Union of South Africa and Sir Nigel Gresley have already arrived at the NRM for the Autumn Great Gathering, which starts on Saturday.
About 140,000 people visited the Great Gathering at the NRM in July, to mark the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s world steam record breaking run, and visitors to the museum this week can see four of the six locomotives in their display position around the Great Hall turntable.
Bob Gwynne, associate curator of railway vehicles at the museum, said: “Bringing the collection to the widest possible audience is what it’s all about, and we hope families will come to see Mallard and sisters this half term and enjoy our speedy activities in Station Hall.
“With the arrival of Mallard’s sisters in steam the stage is now set for our Autumn Great Gathering showcase of Gresley’s streamlined giants and we hope that the thousands of visitors that joined us in July will make tracks to see the big six in a new light for our evening Locos In A Different Light spectacular.”
Locos In A Different Light takes place from October 30 to November 2. For more information, visit nrm.org.uk/mallard75
