Andrew Pern's The Star Inn The City opens in York tonight
YORK’S newest restaurant is opening tonight as an award-winning Ryedale chef lifts the lid on his second venture.
Andrew Pern, proprietor-chef of the Star Inn, at Harome, has renovated a former waterworks building in York’s Museum Gardens to create Star Inn The City.
Following a launch party last night, the 130-seater restaurant is being unveiled to the public this evening in the converted engine shed building next to Lendal Bridge.
Despite almost 5,000 bookings having already been taken, the restaurant is aiming be fully operational by November 1.
Having won a Michelin Star in 2001 at his critically acclaimed country pub near Helmsley, Mr Pern said said he was looking to bring a taste of the countryside to the city.
He said: “It has always been a bit of a dream to open somewhere with more volume.
“We wanted to bring a bit of the countryside to the town, and that’s why we thought Museum Gardens was such a wonderful location as it is so tranquil and is like a patch of country in the city.
“We will be flying the flag for Yorkshire, using all local produce, with all the staff from the York area.
“The restaurant itself looks amazing and the whole team is really excited about the launch.”
Mr Pern paid tribute to Melton interior designer Rachel McLane and York builders Gem Construction for their work on the new restaurant.
The new venture in York has seen Mr Pern, who studied at Scarborough Catering College, now Yorkshire Coast College, teaming up with fellow former student Justin Brosenitz.
Expectations are high for the restaurant in the wake of a host of accolades won by The Star in Harome. In 2011 Mr Pern saw the Star Inn ranked at number 19 when The National Restaurant Awards announced its top 100 establishments in the UK.
The ranking was the highest position for a restaurant located in the north of England and The Star Inn was one of only two ranked Yorkshire restaurants.
Last year the restaurant scooped third place in the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropubs 2012.
