A COUPLE from North Yorkshire prepared for their wedding day in unusual style - by taking part in a triathlon on the morning of the big day.
Debs Feltwell and Jon Cooper, from Easingwold, took part in the Brownlee Triathlon at Fountains Abbey on Saturday, along with Jon’s best man, and nine other members of the wedding party.
The couple are dedicated triathletes, and met through the activity, and also met many of their friends through previous competitions, so felt the event on the day of their wedding would be a fitting tribute to how they first met.
Jon said: “Taking part in one on the morning of our wedding seems right for us. Debs and I met at a triathlon in Zurich in 2004, when I was competing and Debs was a spectator.”
The couple met Olympians the Brownlee brothers ahead of the event, and Jon and his best man completed the race in ties and collars as another way to mark the special day.
Jon completed the event, which involved a 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run, in about 45 minutes, with Debs just a few minutes behind, but the happy couple made sure they finished the race together.
He said: “We ran down through the nave of Fountains Abbey together. It was really picturesque and a nice way to start the day.
“Because we’ve been doing it with all our friends, it’s been absolutely perfect. It’s just good to spend the morning with our family and friends doing what we like to do. It’s a unique day, isn’t it?”
Reverend Liz Hassall, vicar of St Nicholas Church in Husthwaite, where the couple were married later in the day, said: “This is a first for me. Most brides are getting their hair and makeup done before a wedding, not swimming through open water and biking across the countryside.”
